Checklist for Week #6:
Sourcing out your transportation can be a little bit more challenging or might have more steps involved. You can use a website of your choice (example: Volkswagen, Honda etc.) or you can use https://www.autotrader.ca/ which is fairly simple to use and you can get a general idea from different car companies as well.
Watch this video to help you find something on Auto Trader
In order to search for a vehicle and pay for it, you want to consider that you might purchase it over a four or five year term which means that if it were a four-year term you will have to find the cost of the vehicle with taxes included, and then divide that by 48 months and if you are purchasing on a five-year plan, you would ensure you add the taxes and then also divided by 60 monthly payments in order to put the correct amount in your monthly budget. There are some great, helpful sites where they will do the pricing for you. If this is not the case, use this video to help you calculate this.
To buy a City Bus pass:
If you don’t want to purchase a vehicle and if you do not want to drive or can’t afford it, there is also a link to purchase a bus pass in the city of Barrie. Bus pass
If you are planning to live elsewhere based on your accommodations, please look for the transit information from that city (ex. Toronto)
TASK #2:
(20 minutes)
Entertainment: Getting access to tv, internet etc.
In order to figure out the entertainment amount for the monthly budget, this would include if you want to have TV, Internet, a cell phone, Netflix or Crave etc… Any other monthly costs associated with this idea can also include money you want to put aside to go to the theater so this will take some research and you will have to provide some details here. I also suggest you look at the sample for the things that I have included. Example: If you are going to go with Bell or Rogers as your Internet provider perhaps you can get a deal on a cell phone as well? All of these are considered to be estimations and feel free to add any links to your website or research if possible.
TASK #3:
(10-20 minutes)
Food:
Buying groceries: In order to purchase food or groceries, the average single individual may spend anywhere between $75 and $150 each week depending on if you are including meat in your diet or you are purchasing a lot of fruits and vegetables.
Just provide me an approximate amount based on how big of an eater you are – again, you are single, 23 years old, and have no kids, so you are truthfully purchasing for yourself.
You will have to take your amount and multiply by four (# of weeks in a month) so you are looking at a maximum of $600 a month (for example).
Add this value to your chart. See the sample as required.
Howdy,
A reminder to try not to stress yourself out; why not try completing a daily task list. It feels really good when you are able to cross things off of your list. I am available to help and support in any way that I can. Remember you can reach me by email: kahiggins@scdsb.on.ca, cell: 705-791-0780, or Google Hangouts: kahiggins@scdsb.on.ca
This week:
First of all if you haven’t done the tasks for the last two weeks, please take the time now to complete them.
GOOGLE SHEET:
(30-40 minutes)
I would like you to try creating a "to-do list" in Google Sheets. This will help you organize your duties for the day and give you validation when you check things off. You'll create one with at least 10 tasks, therefore this may be your duties for the day or week.
BUDGET (PART 1)
The focus for this week is "My Life at Age 23". For this task, assume you are living on your own. You'll be selecting a career from myBlueprint, determining your annual and monthly income, and renting a place to live. I have provided videos on how to do each of these tasks. I would strongly suggest that you record your information in a table/chart as you will be using this next week when we prepare a monthly budget.
TASK #1:
(10-20 minutes)
Choosing a Career:
TASK #2:
(5-15 minutes)
Determine annual salary (gross income):
- Go to www.myblueprint.ca/simcoe and login.
- Watch the video to see the instructions OR just click on your Favorites 💗 (bottom left side of the menu) and choose an occupation that you have chosen before. If you have not done this, click on Work>Occupations, and do a search of something you are interested in.
- DO NOT choose an occupation based on salary alone. Choose something that you are passionate about, interested in, or have a strength in - you will be more happy if you do this!
- Record your chosen occupation - this is your own document that you can create in your Google Drive. I recommend creating a table/chart to record your information.
TASK #2:
(5-15 minutes)
Determine annual salary (gross income):
- Go to www.myblueprint.ca/simcoe and login if you are not already logged in.
- Watch the video (from Task #1) and pay attention to the notes on salary OR in order to solve it on our own, find the "Estimated Median Salary"
- Record the annual salary in the space provided.
- use appropriate notation and units (ex. $58 000)
TASK #3:
(5-15 minutes)
Calculate the taxes that will be deducted (estimated)
TASK #4:
(5 minutes)
Calculate the monthly income (what you will make each month so you know what you can ‘spend’ or budget for):
(5-15 minutes)
Calculate the taxes that will be deducted (estimated)
- Watch the video to see the instructions.
- Click the link to the following website: https://neuvoo.ca/tax-calculator/
- This will help you find out what taxes are taken off by the government (Federal and Provincial) as well as the other contributions that you need to make (Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and EI (unemployment insurance) from a typical paycheck
- Using your gross pay (or average salary from Step 2), find your NET PAY by following the video instructions /choosing the “per year” amount
- This will be your NET PAY, and is the amount that you “take home” each year, after taxes.
- Record this in your table. Also record three reasons why there are different values for low, median and high salary.
TASK #4:
(5 minutes)
Calculate the monthly income (what you will make each month so you know what you can ‘spend’ or budget for):
- Watch the video to see the instructions. You are to find a place to live that is reasonable for your needs/desires. Pay attention, does this rental include any extras (utilities, cable, internet, parking, etc)?
- Record the rental amount in your table (include the link to your place).
TASK #5:
(15-20 minutes)
Find a place to live:
- Watch the video to see the instructions.
- Record this in your table.
Good luck you glorious 23 year olds!
Checklist for Week #3:

How to save your recipes:
Please show all your work calculations on a piece of paper, take a photo, and upload to your GLS1O folder in your Google Drive. (20-40 minutes)
You're not done yet... you now need to compile a grocery list of all the items required for your recipes. You can assume that nothing is in your cupboards already and all items must be purchased. As you create your grocery list, please organize the items into groups that would be found together. Here are some ideas: (10-15 minutes)
If you need a refresher, here are the lessons:
Brownies (Triple Recipe)
Chocolate Chip Cookies (Half Recipe)
Checklist for Week #2:

Week #1 - April 6th to 9th
Hello,
I hope you are well and everyone is healthy. Today marks an exciting day in our history. We begin our official distance learning journey. Each of us is navigating these unprecedented times to the best of our ability and every family has been handed a unique set of challenges. It is important to remember to do what you are able to manage, ask questions and know that we are all in this together. I am available to help and support in any way that I can. Remember you can reach me by email: kahiggins@scdsb.on.ca or Google Hangouts: kahiggins@scdsb.on.ca
This week:
First and foremost, it is key that we spend some time connecting and checking in with one another. The past few weeks have been extraordinary and I know that we all have our personal journeys that we are eager to share. As we receive information from both the school board and the Ministry, the message is the same - The health and well-being of our students is the most important thing right now. Our goal as educators is not to add to these already stressful times by setting unrealistic expectations. Instead, we hope to provide resources and support to meet each student’s individual needs. Students are asked to complete the survey below, log into Google Hangouts and find our group, and login into your school email and reply to my email. These activities will include more information to help launch our first distance learning task. We will use this week to re-connect, work through any challenges or concerns and practice our new learning format.
